Powering Progress Through Innovation and Insight

The Impact of Student Consulting Projects

Reading Time: 3 minutesThe Bachelor of Innovation: A Unique Interdisciplinary Program I graduated from the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs with a Bachelor of Innovation in Computer Science and Security. This is an interdisciplinary undergraduate program that combines traditional and practical coursework to develop teamwork, innovation, and entrepreneurship skills. You essentially have normal degree requirements but, instead of electives, you have business and innovation classes — most notably ones where you act as consultants to real businesses to gain real-world experience. How Consulting Projects Shaped My Career I credit this program with helping me develop the skills and confidence that landed me here at Mesa. Without the time to commit to an internship, I found consulting with these businesses to be crucial in building a quality resume. I recognized the positive impact that this degree has made in my career and reached out to UCCS to see if Mesa could be a business that students have a project for, and we were selected! Below are the students from UCCS that have worked hard to successfully deliver a project for Mesa’s applications team. Improving Accessibility:

Midland Offices Overcome Tornado Damage, Continue Customer Care

Reading Time: 2 minutesThe weather forecast in Midland, Texas, seemed normal the morning of May 30. The high would be around 100, but Shop Lead Johnathon Roderick said that is to be expected this time of year. “I think it was, you know, higher winds,” Roderick said about the forecast. “10 to 20 mile per hour winds later in the day is what was expected.” Clear skies most of the day gave way to a storm that exceeded expectations, as shortly after 5 p.m., weather alerts for a possible tornado and baseball-sized hail appeared on Midland workers’ phones. Roderick said he left work about five minutes before the warnings came. He saw what looked like a dust storm out of the window of his truck and thought little of it. “Like a minute later, I luckily was going under an underpass,” Roderick said. “It just happened so fast. It started raining really bad — crazy, ridiculous winds — so I just ended up staying under the underpass.” Jerome Goodboe — the health, safety, and environment manager — had left by the time the

Enhancing Grid Reliability: Understanding Ancillary Services

Reading Time: 3 minutesIn the complex task of managing electricity grids, where demand fluctuates and supply must quickly adapt, ancillary services are pivotal players in the ERCOT market. The concepts of energy and capacity are important as ancillary services form the backbone of grid stability – ensuring seamless operations even amidst abrupt disruptions or unforeseen fluctuations such as weather change and transmission blocks. Energy versus Capacity: Key Distinctions Before delving into the nuances of ancillary services, it’s crucial to detect the differences between energy and capacity. Energy: This refers to the actual electricity generated and consumed over time. Every time we flip a switch or use an appliance, we’re tapping into the energy flowing through the grid. Capacity: In contrast, capacity represents the maximum potential of power that can be reliably generated or imported into the grid at any given time. It acts as a reservoir, ready to be utilized whenever demand occurs. Within the realm of capacity, two significant facets demand attention: Capacity for Energy Dispatch: Ensuring there’s enough capacity available to meet the expected electricity demand at each hour is essential.

Navigating Texas Energy: An Introduction to ERCOT, Deregulated Energy, and Mesa Solutions

Reading Time: 4 minutesUnderstanding ERCOT At the heart of Texas’ energy landscape lies ERCOT. Established as an Independent System Operator, ERCOT serves as the conductor of Texas’ electricity, orchestrating the flow of power without owning any generation or transmission assets. This unique model allows for greater flexibility in managing the grid. In the vast expanse of Texas, electricity is not just a commodity; it is a vital necessity powering the lives of over 26 million residents and businesses. Yet, unlike many states where energy is monopolized, Texas has embraced an approach to its energy market through deregulation and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT). This makes them unique; they are like an island; cut off from the rest of the US power grid. Deregulated Energy in Texas The journey towards deregulated energy in Texas began with the passage of Senate Bill 7 in 2002. This landmark legislation ushered a new era of competition and consumer choice. Under this system, consumers have the liberty to select their Retail Electric Provider, empowering them to seek the best rates and services tailored to their needs.

Exploring the 12 Rules of Leadership – Part 4

Reading Time: 5 minutesTable of Contents In this, the last set of the 12 Rules of Leadership (as taught by Jocko Willink in the book, Leadership Strategy and Tactics), let’s look at the final of three rules. Rules 10, 11, and 12 all talk about key qualities for someone in a leadership role to foster. These rules wrap up what it means to be a well-rounded leader. Read below for some personal stories and insights from some of the leaders within the Mesa organization. This title is on the Mesa’s Leadership Reading List, which you can find here. To find the other parts of the series, be sure to check out the links at the end of this article. Rule of Leadership #10: Be Decisive. When it’s time to make a decision, make one. Decisiveness is the ability to make clear-cut and timely decisions with the appropriate amount of information. Being decisive is different than being impulsive or acting without thinking. Instead, being decisive means making decisions that are well thought out and backed by evidence. Here at Mesa, as in any workplace,

Mesa Solutions Receives ISO 27001 Certification

Reading Time: 2 minutesMesa meets internationally recognized standards for information security management systems. LOVELAND, Colo. — March 8, 2024 — Mesa Natural Gas Solutions, a provider at the forefront of cutting-edge power solutions, received ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification Feb. 28, 2024. The International Organization for Standardization and the International Electrotechnical Commission published ISO/IEC 27001:2022, a standard for information security management systems, in October 2022. The certification represents how well Mesa protects against threats to the availability, integrity, and confidentiality of its clients’ information. A-LIGN, an independent, third-party auditor with accreditation from the ANSI National Accreditation Board to perform ISMS 27001 certifications, found Mesa to have technical controls and formalized information technology security policies and procedures in place. Led by Sam Rankl, its information systems security manager, Mesa has implemented several security measures and countermeasures that protect it from unauthorized access or compromise, and IT personnel were found to be conscientious and knowledgeable in best practices. “Obtaining ISO 27001 certification demonstrates, true to form, Mesa’s top-down commitment to excellence,” IT Director Jeff Johnson said. “At Mesa, we understand that our customers, both internal and external, are the lifeblood of the organization.
