Earlier this week I was getting some dental work done. Somewhere between the numbing shot and the new suction thing that I think dislodged a tonsil, my dentist asked me about Mesa.
My mouth was stuffed with cotton, a foreign plastic apparatus was wedged in my cheek, and my lips were numb, yet he waited for an answer. Dr. Allen does not care if you are mid-filling and drooling on the floor; when he wants an answer, he will wait with the patience of a saint and the intensity of a drill. Is “patient aggressive” a thing?
Composing myself, I mumbled that Mesa started in a garage in Wyoming, founded by a group of veterans. It came out far more slobbery than intended, and with significantly fewer vowels, but somehow, he deciphered it. While the real story is much more complex, he seemed satisfied and continued with the incessant drilling. Followed by more drilling. And more drilling. I know it’s not the right attitude to have, but I am not always happy my dentist is a perfectionist.
As he finished, he said, “You know, it’s nice that there are still some opportunities for small businesses to thrive among the giants of Google and Amazon.” As a small business owner himself, he found the idea that a group of Army veterans building a natural gas generator company from scratch genuinely inspiring.

What began 12 years ago as a response to the needs of the oil field has grown into a new standard for service in the power generation space. Those veterans who started Mesa built the first generators themselves. They had a small number of service trucks and a whole lot of grit. And like any small business owner, they felt that surge of pride as a new generator was delivered to a customer.
