When an individual becomes a parent, one of the most rewarding aspects of the job is witnessing the “firsts.” First steps, first taste of ice cream, first time riding a bike, and first tooth to name a few. The best memories end up lodged in your mind and many times it is the funny moments that stick. The toddler years are particularly humorous as they are essentially wobbling little people with no filter. Of course, just being around to watch your children become grown-up humans with their own free will is rewarding in itself. Mesa has had kind of the same trajectory, although our parenting is limited to engines and generators. Maybe not as humorous when things go wrong but rewarding, nonetheless.
Back when Mesa was founded, we had big ideas and the sheer power of will, all in a shop with no heat in the dead of winter. Twelve years later we offer various natural gas generator configurations, dedicated switch gear, and engines. All our equipment is designed here in the USA, we did not slap our name on a generator we bought from someone else. Our R&D facility, located in Northern Colorado, also serves as our corporate headquarters, if something needs to be designed, fixed, or reworked this is where it happens.
Where the Magic Really Happens
Of course, the real magic takes place at our brand-new 3 GW capacity facility in Casper, Wyoming. (This is where the rubber meets the road as the old timers used to say.) We have a team of professionals kicking generators out the door and into the open arms of waiting customers. What is not as apparent is that inside this massive 220,000 square foot structure sits an engine assembly floor as well as an engine rebuild facility. That’s right, Mesa builds or rebuilds all of the engines that power our generators.
Baby Engines
While we tend to focus on generators around here, our GV22PU engines are the core of power generation at Mesa. While we tend to focus on generators around here, the story of how our GV22PU engines became the core of power generation at Mesa is a good one. Years ago, we bought engines to run our generators. These engines are high-quality iron and have provided literally thousands of hours of runtime in all conditions. In fact, many of our long-running generators still utilize these 22-liter power plants.
At Mesa we are actively developing our supply chain with an eye to security and optimization. An opportunity arrived to distribute the very 22-liter engines we were currently using in our generators. The catch being, we would receive long blocks instead of complete engines, meaning the engine would need to be developed before we dropped them into an enclosure.
The Road to Development
Like much of our history, Mesa has decided to go our own way. We would not buy a kit to retrofit our engines; we would develop a superior fuel and intake system from scratch. We stood up an engine division, recruited some exceptional engineers, and bought a bunch of whiteboards. Within a few months we had a running example of the new Mesa GV22PU engine.
Rolling Up Our Sleeves
For anyone who has tried developing a brand-new engine, it is a large undertaking. The initial hurdle was obtaining an EPA certification – our first ever. The engine team put in hundreds of hours of design and testing to make sure all our emissions and fuel economy were acceptable for compliance. If the testing failed, it was back to the drawing board.
Fortunately, we received the official stamp of approval and were awarded an EPA Certification. Meaning we are 100% compliant and ready to sell the GV22PU natural gas engine. That milestone was a few years back, and our engine production has increasingly ramped up since. In that time the GV22PU engine has proved to be an industry leading power plant with more power than previous generations, very quickly becoming a customer favorite.
