Since our first day, Mesa Solutions has been guided by three pillars: safety, quality, and productivity. See how we’ve adapted to fluctuating markets and changing industries while still delivering reliable, resilient power to the people that count on us most — all while staying true to our founding principles.
That same spring, the first Mesa generators were deployed into the Powder River Basin, followed quickly by an expansion into the Bakken which in turn led to Mesa’s presence in the Permian and Delaware basins. In late 2014, oil prices began to creep downward and despite the financial downturn, our dedicated technicians and the core Mesa team held strong.
The team built a foundation for functionality and product improvements that would effectively operate during an oil downturn. Also in 2015, Mesa gained market share in Wyoming, Colorado, North Dakota, Utah, Texas and New Mexico thanks to the dedication of some new additions to the team.
These designs built on the lessons we learned in the first stage of operations, where we saw design flaws in the units Mesa had originally purchased. The end goal was to design and bring to market a Mesa unit capable of superior performance in the icy winter blast of the North Dakota oilpatch, or the sweltering summer heat on a West Texas drill rig.
Manufacturing was producing high quality generators and sending them to the field, while continually improving the process. Ultimately, Mesa Solutions moved its corporate headquarters to Loveland, Colorado to better support the customer base and continually raise the bar within the industry.
Despite the COVID-19 pandemic and one of the largest downturns in U.S. history, Mesa continued to grow and develop in these incredibly harsh operating conditions. The Mesa Engine Rebuild Facility (MERF) saw a whopping 67 engines. We also added the “Head Shop,” a facility specifically designed for rebuilding cylinder heads, while maintaining quality control and keeping supply in-house. As potential new verticals were identified, expansion of engine rebuild capabilities, innovative product lines and newly created departments were established.
We began to focus on keeping production operations in the USA, so we built and designed the first PowerCore® prototype in both the new corporate headquarters/R&D facility in Loveland and in the Casper location. The MERF was also ramping up engine rebuild efforts and produced 124 rebuilt engines for use in Mesa generators.
Relying on the three pillars of Safety, Quality and Productivity above all else, the generator fleet was growing, and new talent meant new innovations were being brought to market.
We opened several new departments and Mesa continued to grow.
Additionally, Mesa began its North American Distributorship with Hyundai Infracore (formerly Doosan), formally announcing this partnership at the ConExpo show in Las Vegas, Nevada, unveiling the new Mesa GV22PU engine!
Mesa is stepping into the future with experience under our belt, lessons learned and implemented, and a drive to always bring our customers the reliable, resilient power they expect and deserve.
Our story really begins in 1956, when Thomas Boone Pickens Jr., who would eventually become one of Mesa’s first investors, entered a partnership known as Petroleum Exploration. Then, in 1964 Pickens led Petroleum Exploration in an initial public offering, changing the name to Mesa Petroleum for “the picturesque, table-topped lands that rise out of the Texas Panhandle.” After selling Mesa Petroleum in 1996, T. Boone Pickens founded his energy hedge fund, BP Capital which was a primary investor in Mesa.
In 2014, Mesa Natural Gas Solutions began with a small team of veterans, so small that sales duties fell upon all members of the team as we had yet to hire a dedicated sales department. As more generators were deployed that spring and Mesa’s presence grew in the Powder River, Bakken, Permian and Delaware basins, it was imperative for Mesa to hire even more qualified technicians to keep the generators running. Kyle Loos, Shayne Seibert, Brandon Woodall, Jack Connly, Robert Allen and Kyle Cahenzli were just a few of the technicians welcomed to the team in the winter of 2014/2015.
During the first winter in business, Mesa weathered what proved to be one of the most significant oil downturns since the late 1990s and early 2000s. The commitment of our team to service, innovation and uncompromising customer care set Mesa apart from the competition and provided us with a strong industry advantage.
2017 was a big year for Mesa.
In the spring, Mesa relocated into the present manufacturing facility at 5151 Reserve Drive in Evansville, Wyoming. But it wasn’t a simple move –– the building was in a state of disrepair, so extensive work needed to be done to transform the space. Mesa hired a large group of employees from a local, temporary employment agency for the job. Once setup was complete, Mesa had a functioning manufacturing facility, prototypes and a team with a winning culture cultivated from those lessons learned during those first, challenging years.
In May, the new manufacturing team developed an extensive Quality Assurance/Quality Control process and the first V-Series Mesa natural gas generators, followed closely by inline models, rolled out the door. Hundreds of generator units and distribution trailers were manufactured in this first year of production. At the same time, Mesa was also developing a common bus solution to meet customer needs. The new procurement and manufacturing teams worked together to develop a streamlined manufacturing process to increase speed without sacrificing quality. As oil prices began to rise, Mesa’s reputation began to grow along with an increase in demand for reliable, clean power solutions.
In June, Mesa received the Department of Defense Freedom Award. This award is the highest honor given by the Department of Defense, and Mesa was just one of the 15 winners selected out of 3,000 applications.
Also in 2018, Mesa became a participant in OSHA’s Safety Health Achievement Recognition Program, recognizing businesses that operate exemplary safety and health programs.
Additionally, Mesa Solutions was announced as a recipient of the Department of Labor HIRE Vets Medallion Program Demonstration Platinum Award. Recipients of the award were evaluated on several criteria; ranging from veteran hiring and retention, providing veteran-specific resources, leadership programming, to dedicated human resources, and tuition assistance or reimbursement programs.
The operations center has increased Mesa’s ability to provide customers with immediate subject matter expertise and assistance in mitigating shutdowns preemptively. Mesa’s engineering department began to grow rapidly, and key maintenance facilities were established in Carlsbad and Casper.
